SWS-North

Join us on May 30, 2021, to celebrate the official launch of SWS-North, the Canadian chapter of the Sociologists for Women in Society. The celebration features welcome addresses from current SWS-President Mignon Moore and SWS-North co-chairs Pallavi Banerjee and Tina Fetner, as well as a panel discussion on crafting intersectional feminist futures. Through breakout groups and facilitated conversations, attendees will be invited to share their personal vision for a national organization dedicated to developing an intersectional feminist community of scholars and peers. Opportunities abound for those in attendance to get directly involved in charting the path of SWS-North, as we venture into the Canadian horizon.

Announcing SWS-North – a regional SWS Chapter for feminist sociologists in Canada

We are delighted to announce the formation of SWS-North, a regional chapter of Sociologists for Women in Society. SWS-North seeks to build a community for scholars across Canada who are drawn to SWS’s mission of intersectional feminism in sociology: “encouraging the development of sociological feminist theory and scholarship; transforming the academy through feminist leadership, career development, and institutional diversity; promoting social justice through local, national, and international activism; and supporting the publication and dissemination of cutting-edge feminist social science.”

Sociologists for Women in Society has been a place of community and support for feminist sociologists since 1971. Its dedication to social justice is expressed through its Sister to Sister, Discrimination, Social Action, and Academic Justice committees, through which the organization lives up to its commitment to social justice for Black, Indigenous, and racialized people, LGBTQ2+-identifying people, and people with disabilities.

On September 8, 2020, Pallavi Banerjee and Tina Fetner signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SWS President, Josephine Beoku-Betts and Executive Officer, Barret Katuna to establish a new regional chapter, SWS- North, serving all of Canada. SWS-North will meet once per year in person coinciding with the Canadian Sociological Association conference. Between in-person meetings, we can hold virtual activities and develop initiatives to further the SWS mission.
