Feminist Futures in the Global South: Research, Activism and Creativity

President-Elect, Josephine Beoku-Betts

The thematic vision for the 2020 SWS Winter Meeting is transnational feminism with an emphasis on the Global South. We will have plenaries focusing on feminist futures in the Global South, migration issues and border politics with an emphasis on the border politics in San Diego, and a celebration of women, gender, and sexualities studies programs in San Diego and beyond. The Program Committee for the SWS 2020 Winter Meeting invites you to submit abstracts for papers, sessions or workshops to present at the meetings.  The deadline for consideration is October 17, 2019 at 11:59 pm Eastern Time.

To submit, go to: to log into your membership profile. Or, click HERE.

Please consider submitting one of the following:

  • An abstract (250 words) for a paper on any topic related to gender, feminism, migration and social justice for roundtable sessions.
  • An abstract for a session or workshop related to the conference theme which is “Feminist Futures in the Global South: Research, Activism and Creativity.”  Include the names of 3-4 recommended participants for the session or workshop with the abstract.
  • Committee chairs who wish to host sessions in addition to committee meetings are asked to respond at this time.

You may submit your abstracts and descriptions of workshops and sessions (250 words) via the MemberClicks portal. You must be a current SWS member in order to submit.

What is a Session?

A Session is a space for multiple paper presentations or a dialogue on a common theme. Sessions have been 90 minutes in duration in the past. The time for your presentation will depend on the number of Session participants.

What is a Workshop?

A Workshop is a space for people to participate in an interactive dialogue on a particular theme/topic. Workshops have been 90 minutes in duration in the past. The time for your participation in this workshop will depend on the number of Workshop participants.

What is a Roundtable?

A Roundtable is a small gathering of individuals who are presenting their papers on topics that share a common theme. Roundtables are a great opportunity to present your research and to collect very helpful feedback from other presenters and attendees. If you are submitting an independent paper that is not linked to a Session or Workshop, you should submit your paper for a Roundtable. Roundtables have been 75 minutes in duration in the past. The time allotted for your Paper presentation will depend on the number of Roundtable presenters. We will have discussants for all roundtables.

Please save any attachments that you will be submitting as your name. For Example: Last Name, First Name.
