- Several workshops will focus on the “stages in the life cycle of a sociologist,” from milestones in the life of a graduate student through preparing for retirement, as an academic or applied sociologist.
- The SWS Student Caucus will host a workshop, “Office Hours: Teaching in the Time of Terror,” which will provide an opportunity for instructors to share knowledge and experience on navigating and subverting attacks on higher education.
- The SWS Publications Committee will sponsor “How to Publish your First Article,” and will feature scholars at different stages of their careers as well as a representative from the Gender & Society Editorial Board. Topics will include how to decide which journal to submit to and how to handle rejections.
- The SWS Committee on Academic Justice and Committee on Discrimination will co-sponsor a panel titled ‘Resisting Together – Connecting the dots between sexism and racism in Higher Education.’ This workshop will address the current academic climate of increased censorship in teaching in gender and sexuality studies as well as in race, racism, and discrimination.
- The SWS International Committee is hosting a workshop that’s entitled, “How to Conduct Research Internationally and Navigate US Academia as an International Academic” The workshop will address the intentional exchange of ideas between international sociologists working in the US academy and researching and engaging populations outside the United States.
- The SWS Sister to Sister Committee is highlighting past awardees of the Esther Ngan-ling Chow and Mareyjoyce Green Scholarship in “A Fireside Chat with Past Chow-Green Awardees: A Look into the Past and the Future.” Participants will highlight their research trajectories and how the award shaped their careers.
- The SWS Latin+ Feminist Sociology Collective and the SWS International Committee are co-sponsoring a workshop titled “Language Justice Struggles’’ where they will address the politics of language and its connection with colonialism, imperialism, racism, ageism, sexism, and classism. This conversation will highlight the contingency of language justice struggles and its multiple facets that are linked with public sociology and transnationalism. Participants will learn how they may become involved in struggles for language justice at different points in their life cycles as sociologists.
- Together, the Nominations Committee and the Task Force on Leadership Sustainability will focus on how to build sustainable feminist leadership. All who are interested in learning about feminist leadership in general, and those curious about what it entails to be part of a committee, running for Chair or Co-Chair positions and being part of SWS are encouraged to attend.
- The SWS Social Action Committee will provide a space through their workshop “Journeying Toward Liberation: Art and Healing in Activist Spaces” for participants to discuss the uses and value of art in activist spaces. Participants will learn how they can center their healing as they do the critical work of liberation. This workshop will also include the creation of a piece of art that participants may take home with them.
- The SWS Career Development Committee will provide its highly popular “Critique Me: Preparing for the Academic Job Market” Workshop. This workshop will address how to prepare job application materials and will include time for group discussion, and for participants to ask questions, discuss strategies, receive advice, and share experiences.
- Co-President, Melanie Heath, will lead a workshop that will explore how SWS can provide a space for queer and trans SWS members.
- The 2023 SWS Honorary Feminist Sociologist Award Recipient, Sharon Harley, Associate Professor, Department of African American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park will deliver a talk on Black women’s labor history on Saturday, August 19.
- The 2022 SWS Feminist Activism Awardee, Georgiann Davis, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Mexico will deliver a talk based on her activism on Sunday, August 20 at the SWS Awards Reception.
- At the 2023 Summer Awards Reception, we will honor our 2023 Summer Awardees who will receive the following awards: The 2023 Esther Ngan-Ling Chow and Mareyjoyce Green Scholarship, the 2023 Beth B. Hess Memorial Dissertation Scholarship, the 2023 SWS Feminist Mentoring award, the 2023 SWS-ASA Minority Fellows, and the 2023 Social Actions Initiative Awards.
