SWS Reception

Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS), founded in 1971, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing gender equity and inclusion within sociology and through sociological education, research, and dissemination of scholarly work to scholars, practitioners, and the public at large.

In 2024, SWS embarked on a significant rebuilding effort for about 16 months to reimagine and update the entire infrastructure of SWS and address important concerns that centered on transparency, leadership, decision-making, and the experiences of people with racially marginalized identities. Through a nomination process, which included self-nominations, SWS formed the SWS Rebuilding Committee. The SWS Rebuilding Committee was a representational group of SWS members who worked collaboratively to rebuild the association from the ground up, including important updates to bylaws, decision-making processes, leadership structures, and adopting an innovative restorative conversations process to address concerns productively.

The incredible amount of work done by our members is a reflection of our commitment to building and sustaining a supportive feminist sociological community.
